Walnut has long been prized for its hard, dense grain, which can be polished to a very smooth finish. Varieties range from creamy white to dark chocolate. When kiln-dried, the walnut wood tends to be dull brown; but when air-dried, it turns a purplish-brown. Because of its beauty, veneer sliced from walnut was used on some clocks rather than being solid walnut.
